The process and what it entails
It is a process in manufacturing whereby material is injected into a mould. The moulding cycle involves a sequence of events which starts when the mould closes. Then, the polymer is injected into the mould cavity and after it's filled, it is then melted and later, cools and hardens. High pressure is maintained to make up for shrinkage of the material. Shrinkage may cause the moulded part to cling to the cores while cooling or twist when pulling away of the mould cavity takes place. The mould shapes the polymer to a preferred design. This process brings about the desired end product. It is a common process for plastic parts manufacture and requires using a moulding machine, mould and the materials to be injected. Injection machines consist of an injection ram, a heating unit and a material hopper. Most moulding companies use different types of injection moulding processes such as thin-wall injection moulding, die casting, metal injection moulding among others.
Types of materials used in the process
The process can be performed with materials such as confections, glasses, thermosetting and thermoplastic polymers. The most important selection criteria of what material is to be used focus on the strength of material, and the function of the end product. Thermoplastics are most commonly used for injection moulding due to their characteristics that make them more suitable. These characteristics are their flexibility to be used in many applications, ease to soften and flow when heated, their safety element and their recycling ease. Some examples of thermoplastics include nylon, polythene, and polystyrene.
Considering what moulding material to use
An engineer or an industrial designer is allowed to carry out the design of a product. A toolmaker makes the mould from aluminum or steel and designs the mould in a way it will produce the desired part of the end product. The choice of what mould to use should be made focusing on economic and cost factors. Aluminum is not advisable for large volume production due to its susceptibility to wear and tear. However, it is effective for low volume production as it is less expensive. Steel is more costly but has a longer lifespan (not prone to wear and damage) and should be used for large production volumes. Beryllium copper can also be used in some sections of the mould that require immediate heat removal.
Uses of the parts
There must be precision when parts being injection moulded are designed, to enable the injection moulding process take place effectively. Take in to account the desired features of the parts, shape of parts, material and also the moulding machine properties. These considerations will reduce chances of error of parts being manufactured. Injection moulding serves the purpose of manufacturing parts such as car dashboards, some musical instruments, storage containers, bottle caps, pocket combs among many plastic products. Most manufacturing parts in the modern world today are produced through the injection moulding process. It is the most ideal method of producing large volumes of the same object.
